It is hard to believe that another year is about to draw to a close. This is the time of year when most of us begin to scratch our heads and wonder to ourselves, “Just where has the year gone?” It seems like the older you get, the faster that time slips by. This year, like all previous years, has been a busy and productive one for the Water Utility.
While the Water Production and Wastewater Treatment Divisions worked diligently and painstakingly to keep drinking water and waste water in compliance with standards and flowing in proper directions, the Engineering Division provided direction and oversight for several important capital improvement projects. One of these was a new 750,000 gallon elevated water storage tank constructed west of the Interstate. With only a few minor items remaining to be completed, the new tank will be placed into service in the Spring of next year. Additionally, the parking lot and equipment staging area at the Water Centre were resurfaced, while the laboratory spaces at the Wastewater Treatment Plant received a badly needed facelift. These projects were in addition to several smaller-scale projects that were completed throughout the Utility.
The Distribution Division took advantage of a lull in the number of water main breaks occurring in the late spring and early summer of this year to perform directional flushing of a portion of the water distribution system. This was the first time that this innovative approach to flushing water mains has ever been attempted by the Water Utility. This process also allowed the Distribution Division to discover and make repairs to a number of worn shutoff valves and fire hydrants.
In addition to making sure that all of our customers receive first-class service, the Business Services Division took on the enormous task of doing all of the research and preparatory work necessary to implement a sewerage rate increase. When the rate goes into effect in January, it will be the first time that it has been increased since 1995.
On the personnel side, we sadly said goodbye to some of our employees while we gladly welcomed other employees into the Water Utility family.
Needless to say, everyone at the Water Utility has been extremely busy and we should all be proud of our accomplishments this year. From the managers, directors and supervisors at the Water Utility, we thank you for your hard work and dedication to the Utility and we wish everyone a very happy holiday season! We look forward with great anticipation to the challenges and successes that next year will bring. |
